Brutus' Story
Brutus was
a stray found by the wonderful shelter we work with in
Arizona (The one who saved Dozer, Kiara and Addie as
well). They brought him in and at the time, we could not
bring him in due to lack of foster room.
The first
week or two that Brutus was in the shelter, he jumped
the fence, because he didn't like being left alone.
Doing that, he gave him self a really long, deep wound
on his back. Lori took him to the vet where he needed a
TON of staples and had to be kept crated so it could
heal properly.
During that
time he was healing at Lori's home, they were able to
evaluate him better. This boy was amazing! He knew all
of his commands, he didn't have any accidents and
immediately took to his crate training. He did great
with other dogs, but would rather have a ball than a
playmate.
Finally, we had some
open room so we had Lori bring Fletch on down to us.
Christine was new to fostering, so we tried giving her
an older, calmer pup. He had some adjusting time to his
new family and the pool, but after about 3 weeks, I got
the semi-expected email from Christine, saying that she
just could not give Mr. Brutus up. So, this guy is now
living VERY happily at his "foster" home with his new
brother Cody and sister, Tamu.
From the first moment I
saw Brutus staring out at me from his crate in the back
of Lori's car after his long trip from Utah, I knew I
was in trouble. There was just no way I was going to be
ok letting that sweet boy go off to live with someone
else. For the first week Brutus was with me he had
trouble with the fact that the house smelled only like
Cody, and he felt the need to change that, by marking
all over the place! That, I would soon learn, was
quickly cured (thank god!). Once we were over that issue
Brutus continued to worm his way into my heart by
cuddling with me for hours at a time, giving kisses and
just being a generally happy boy. Brutus loves to play
fetch and will chase a ball (or anything you throw for
that matter) for as long as your arm holds out. He has
also become quite the swimmer since he's been with me
and will now happily dive into the pool after a ball,
and I am working on teaching him how to jump in for just
a cooling off swim like Cody does. Brutus is certainly
settling well into his new home, his coat is getting
shinier by the day and his tail is wagging more than
ever!
