| Cooper's Story -
Typically
we are so inundated with owner surrenders, we can't make
it down to pull from our very own shelter.. and when we
did, there would be usually 3-5 labs and all would have
a waiting list.
One Friday
afternoon, I got a call from another rescue group here
in Las Vegas, saying she had pulled some of her breed
from the shelter and there were TONS of purebred labs in
there. With the shelter being so crowded, they were
euthanizing 10-20 dogs PER DAY. I immediately called my
foster home and we made plans to go try to save at least
a couple.
One of the
first rooms we went in, we saw this beautiful chocolate
boy just sitting in his kennel looking confused, but
happy. Where as most of the other pens had tons of dogs
and dog poop smeared ALL over everything, Cooper was by
himself and was surprisingly very clean.
We pulled
him along with Molly (See her tail on Happy Tails) and
since they were so overcrowded and they had not vetted
him, we were able to just pull him and leave.
We took him
to the vet where aside from a minor case of kennel
cough, he was totally healthy. We neutered him, chipped
him, vaccinated him and he was ready (VERY ready) to get
out of there by the 2nd day.
Our foster
home Jill took this energetic puppy home and fostered
him for almost 3 weeks.
Emily and
her family sent in an application after months of
watching the site for that "perfect" dog (for them). Her
application was approved and the home visit (with Cooper)
went beyond our expectations. He is now the fifth
brother (He has four non fur brothers to look after) in a
VERY happy home.
We
had thought about getting a dog for a long time, but
we weren't sure if we were ready because our kids
are pretty young. Once we decided that we would
start looking a lab seemed like the perfect fit for
our family. I found the Las Vegas Labrador Rescue
web site and started checking it about four or five
months ago. We wanted a yellow lab and I thought
about sending in the information sheet a few times
but for some reason I found myself kind of nervous,
thinking maybe we weren't really ready yet. Then
one day I checked the site and saw the cutest
chocolate lab. When I read his description I just
thought to myself, "this is our dog." I told my
husband that even though it wasn't the yellow that
we thought we wanted, I really thought we needed to
act on this dog. I emailed the application and Lisa
replied that same day. We started the process and
once our application was approved we had a home
visit. We were lucky because we got to meet the dog
at the home visit. My husband couldn't be there but
the rest of us all loved him and it just felt like
the perfect fit. After we got the O.K. we set up
the adoption and picked him up from his foster mom,
Jill. The next thing we knew we had a chocolate lab
who we named Cooper! He is already such a part of
our family, it just feels like we've had him
forever. He seemed to respond to his name quickly
and my husband, who didn't get to meet him with the
rest of us, quickly realized why we had been so
excited after the home visit. He is still a puppy
with lots of energy but with four boys around he is
getting lots of attention and play time. This has
been such an incredible experience. Looking back I
realize that it was just a matter of being a little
patient and waiting for the dog that would be just
right for our family! I cannot express enough how
grateful I am for Lisa and the volunteers that work
with her! They truly care about every dog that they
rescue and want to find the family that is right for
each of them. Thank you so much for everything!
