Surrendering Your Lab

Some reasons that people give up their labs are:

  1. My family is moving to a place that doesn't allow animals.
  2. This dog has a lot of energy and I didn't know what I was getting myself into.
  3. Someone in my household has developed allergies and we can no longer keep the lab.
  4. My lab doesn't get along with other animals in the household.
  5. We don't have enough time to give it the attention it deserves.

As a rescue group, we are responsible for trying to help the Lab population by bringing them in and re-homing them somewhere that they will forever call home. We try to pull dogs that are truly in need (in the shelters, scheduled to be PTS, strays found on the roadside), but we do also take in Labs that owners are wanting to surrender.

With our foster homes being limited, that means space is too. We are the only Labrador Retriever rescue group in Las Vegas so when there is any Labrador in need, we get the call. We have had several people threaten to take their beloved Lab to the pound if we didn't take them in within a few days. Please keep in mind, we are trying to save as many as we can and unless that animal is a threat to you or your family's safety, please be patient and hold on to your dog until we have room in our program. In some cases, we will list your dog on our site to try getting some interest, while we are freeing up room in our rescue.

Shelter life is hard on animals. Imagine being taken from your home, taken away from the family you have unconditionally loved and being thrown into a dirty place that is full of thousands of other dogs that bark and fight all of the time, you have no bed to lay in anymore, very limited (if any) physical interaction with humans and you are scared out of your mind. A lot of dogs (including senior citizens and puppies) get sick in shelters with illnesses such as Kennel Cough or Parvo. Many dogs will never make it out alive.

If you are re-homing your dog for one of the above listed reasons, they at least deserve the chance to be placed in a rescue group, so they can at least go into a loving home while they wait to be adopted out.

Please also note, due to the lack of space in our program and the overwhelming amount of Labradors in need, we tend to be very selective with the owner surrender dogs we accept into our program. This includes mixes (not that we won't, but we are very careful with the ones we do) and dogs with any form of aggression issues. We do not have the resources to rehabilitate aggressive dogs. If you surrender a Labrador to us without disclosing aggression issues, the chances are, that the dog will end up being put down. We really wish we could help those dogs, but the sad truth is, that we cannot. So, please, BE HONEST when surrendering your Labrador.

If you are wanting to surrender your Lab to Las Vegas Labrador Rescue, you must follow the below procedure.

Every step must be completed before your Lab will even be evaluated for acceptance into our program!

bullet Complete form labeled Owner Surrender Information Form, see link below
bullet Return form via email, luvmylabs130@cox.net or fax (702) 645-0945
bullet Email (scanned copies) or fax all records, including ALL vet records to LVLR. Also fill out and sign the form labeled Owner Surrender Signature form and fax that WITH the vet records.
bullet Email pictures (please include several, including head and full body shots) to us at luvmylabs130@cox.net
bullet Wait for a rescue director to contact you via email about your lab (if you do not hear within 48 hours please feel free to email to follow up)

Once your lab is accepted into our program, it could be a few days or weeks before we can bring the lab into our foster home. We really appreciate your patience during this time, as waiting it out those days or weeks, will ensure your dog stay in a loving, home environment and not be dumped in some shelter with a very slim chance of making it out alive.

One final note, we do usually ask for small donation fee in return for us helping you re-home your Labrador Retriever. The fee ranges - but we do accept any size donation. We will be sure to inform you of the amount when we arrange for pick up.
